My previous tanked water heater was past the point where I would have expected it to fail and I decided to proactively replace it. After researching over a one year period, I decided that going with the tankless water heater was the path that I wanted to take. I researched all of the brands and settled on Rinnai as a result of reputation throughout the industry and having all of the features that I wanted in the new system. I ultimately settled on the RUR160EP as the tankless water heater of choice. Many factors led to this selection. First was related to location of the old hot water heater and my desire to move it. It was in the house and took up space in the mud room. I have a dedicated area outdoors for HVAC and whole house generator, and that's the 'utility area' where I wanted the water heater. The second factor was related to the appearance and ease of installation. The RUR160 has an integral pump and comes with the wifi setup. This made it so that an external recirculation pump was not required. The entire installation is self-contained without a bunch of added wiring. The third item was related to ease of use. I wanted to be able to easily control circulation or have it function like a standard water heater. This factor was really related to my skepticism on the recirculation function and how much I would actually use it. I wanted the performance to be no worse than the old tanked water heater. I did the change out before the old water heater gave up, so I was able to take my time on the installation (including a dedicated recirc line) and then cutover to the new system. Isolating the old hot water heater was simple and I was able to confirm the new system was functioning properly before committing to it. I am very impressed with the new system and really like the programmed recirculation feature. I went through and insulated all of the hot water lines and recirculation lines. This results in having very short wait times for at least moderately warm water during non-recirculation periods. The recirculation feature works very well and the wait time at the most distant faucets is just a few seconds (longer if the recirc isn't on, but no different from a tanked water heater). The price is a bit more for the RUR model, but it works out to be very little difference from lesser models. Adding in the pump, associated plumbing / electrical, additional labor, wifi interface, and subtracting out the $300 tax credit, makes it almost a wash on price. Based on the 3 months that I've had the system running, you won't be disappointed with this choice.

I needed to add a hot water tank to an accessory dwelling unit (ADU). I didn't have much space and wanted to include a recirculation pump to make hot water quickly available. The model RUR199 took care of all me needs. The outdoor installation saved space and solved venting challenges and the integrated recirculation pump was a welcome feature. This was a DYI project and the County Inspector was complimentary of the installation!

Love the recirculation feature and the phone app that connects via bluetooth. I have two areas for improvement. My Rinnai is mounted on an outside wall and the regulator froze once this winter although I'm in a mild climate and only had a couple of nights below freezing. Also, it tends to run a lot even when not using hot water, which is part of the recirculation valve. I wish the app allowed to turn the recirculation valve on and off (not just the water heater) to be used only when we need hot water.

Water heater works fine, but WIFI app controller does not work well enough. Should be provided only on request and come with warning that MUST have very strong and reliable WIFI coverage and I-Phone - not Comcast WIFI and Android phone! On-site programmable unit should be included unless buyer asks for the WIFI unit.
