"Tankless beats hot tank in every way"

We use our unit mostly for non-circulating hot water use. This keeps fuel costs low and, of course, we never run out of hot H2O.

Excellent integrated recirculating system. Manual controller is cumbersome to setup and WiFi controller has experienced major functionality issues when firmware upgrade introduced.

"Hot water sometimes shuts off on its own while only providing water to a single shower when everything else in the house that takes water is shut off."

Likes: When it works; the water is hot. Like being able to run multiple applications with hot water without running out. Love being able to fill up my 125 gallon bath tub full of hot water without having to constantly heat and pay for150 gallon hot water storage tank being a single guy living in a house. Works in interior Alaska where ground water temperatures drop down to roughly 38 degrees farenheit in the winter time. Dislike: hot water shuts off on it's own and throws a code saying that the condensation drain pipe is clogged when it isnt.( this tells me the compressor expelling the water isnt always strong enough to pump the condensation out and on such an expensive product it shouldnt be an issue.) I also dislike the fact that unlike other on demand hot water heaters; you cannot turn up the temperature of the hot water above 120 degrees farenheit to get a steady stream of hot water across long runs without having to wait up to 2 minutes for the hot water to heat up the run of water piping before producing hot enough water.

Great system. A little complicated to program until you learn your way around the system.

We are new to tankless. Had it for about 3 months now and love it. Circulation feature provides almost instantaneous hot water and so far an endless supply.

"Works fine, controls could be better"

I got my Rinnai water heater because I built a new house and my builder and installer recommended it. I try to stay with mainstream products that installers and servicers are generally familiar with. In my experience this turns out to be a useful factor over time. I believe Rinnai is generally the strongest player in this category of hot water heater, so it is possible there isn't really a comparable product. I would have liked to have seen more intuitive interface with the included control panel. I bought the separately sold WiFi module, having been told that I could connect both the supplied control panel as well as the WiFi module plus app at the same time. Later Rinnai tech support told me it was one or the other, not both. I wish they had been clearer about it up front, before I shelled out for an expensive paper weight (WiFi module). Turns out that a subsequent update to the product line now includes both the control panel and the WiFi module with the water heater, though I don't know if that means both can be connected at the same time. My supplier must have shipped me one of the last units of the older model in the distribution system. This is really my only significant frustration with my water heater.

"Great Hot Water with Too Many Programming Options"

While we’ve only had our new Rinnai for about 6 weeks, so far, so good. The recirculating feature is great for immediate hot water (not as great on utilities 😬), but, overall, it is just too feature-filled. A simpler unit is preferable in our opinion. Too many timers, settings, etc. It also has to be reprogrammed every time the power goes out (which it does here frequently). We’ve had a simpler, cheaper unit before, and I think Rinnai could learn a few things on being “user friendly” from these cheaper units.

Advertising somewhat misleading. Not at all hot water on demand and is even slower than typical hot water tank. If you don't have a dedicated return line hot water is re-directed to the cold water line and you subsequently waste a lot of water waiting for the Cold To return from the hot water in the line. The remote turns on the heater but it is in one hour increments which if really too long, While the remote is on water is constantly running through system and is really noisy. The diversion valve which is installed under the sink farthest from the unit is supposed to close when temperature reaches 102 degrees but it doesn't seem to reliable as the unit stays on for very extender periods. Decent product but know what you are getting.

If you have a timer, be sure to reset the clock with a power surge or brief outage or you may not have instant hot water during your scheduled times. Use a computer batter backup to prevent this. Also, during install be sure the installer knows how to set all internal switches for it to work properly. Have your gas hooked up completely before they install.
